A Brief History of France
The Kingdom of France was founded in the Middle Ages by Hugh Capet. The rise of the monarchy allowed France to become a more centralized state. Toward the end of the Middle Ages, France and England engaged in a dispute over territory that evolved in a full-scale war. It is now infamously known as the Hundred Years War. France defeated England in the century long conflict.
Perhaps the most tumultuous period in French history is the French Revolution. The most famous figures in French history originate from this period, including Napoleon Bonaparte, Marie Antoinette, and Louis XVI. France experienced a total upheaval of the constitutional monarchy, replaced by a democratic republic, catapulting France into the modern era. France celebrates Bastille Day, or French National Day, on July 14 to commemorate French the storming of the Bastille and the uprising of the modern nation. It is formally called "La Fête Nationale" (The National Celebration) and is more commonly known in France as "La Bastille" (on the Fourteenth of July).
